Hi all,
I am having a problem with using KMS encryption for LTO5 tapes. I am using an IBM TS3200 loaded with LTO5 drives with Netbackup Enterprise 6.5.5. After installing and configuring KMS and configuring the tape library to use Application Managed Encryption, LTO5 tapes were not encrypting, but LTO4 tapes were encrypting.
I have tested the instructions in technote http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO56306 which reported positive, but when testing the instructions in technote http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH87444 the bptm logs reported the following for the media:
IBM LTO5 tape: fl1 0x00010049 (this apparently means the drive can support encryption but not the tape)
HP LTO4 tape: fl1 0x00030049 (this apparently means the drive and tape can support encryption)
Both LTO4 and LTO5 tapes work fine normally (unencrypted) in the LTO5 drive. And the release notes http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH61304 when KMS was introduced, it only specifies LTO4 media can be encrypted, so this has me wondering if 6.5.5 does not support LTO5 KMS encryption perhaps? I am looking to upgrade to 7.1 soon with Vsphere soon to be introduced into our environment.
Any assistance or pointers would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Dan

NetBackup 6.5 Hardware
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH48687
Pages 214-215 seem to indicate LTO5's require 6.5.6 or later
and
NetBackup 7.x Hardware
http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH76495
Pages 162-163 seem to indicate LTO5's require 7.0.1 or later
Which make you wonder if they missed something when "building" 7.0GA!
- or at least that's how I read it!

That pretty much spells it out to me, I will have to do a formalized change control so I can upgrade next week, but I will upgrade to version 6.5.6 for then (will wait for 7.0.1 when we aren't so snowed under).
Once I get it installed I will run a test and let you know the result. But I do like the looks of it after seeing it on paper, thanks for sharing Andy!
Cheers,
Dan

6.5.6 was the ticket. Thanks so much for digging that up Andy, much appreciated!
