Media Server access to Vmware/ESX

Hello,

We are troubleshooting an error for a vmware policy (156) and some doubts were raised:

1- Does the media server need to access the  Vmware/ESX through an IP address?

2 - What kind of connection is required for the client to initiate an snapshot on the virtual machine?

Regards

VMware backup host must have connectivity between VMware hosts(vCenter and ESXs).

Exactly, media server does not need to communicate with VMware hosts(vCenter and ESXs), but in common planning, media servers are also used as VMware backup host. So, in common case, media servers requires connectivity between VMware hosts.

The media server talks directly to vCenter using the name or IP address that has been supplied in the credential section of the admin console to initiate snapshot / backup

The media server asks vCenter to do the backup and it is vCenter that initiates it using the internal VMware processes

The media server does not talk dsirectly to the client at all during a backup but does do a lookup of the client and will fail the job it is cannot be resolved

Hope this helps
