Media Server problem

AndyPilgrim

Hi,

I am new to Netbackup and wonder if someone could shed some light on an issue I am having. I have an AIX 5.3 server that is meant to be a Media Server. I have installed the server software and the client software (as it will be backed up itself as well) and in the host properties section on the Master Server it only appears in the Clients section. It also says in the Host Type column it’s a Client. However, if I double click on it and go into the properties, when I come out it still only shows in the Clients section but the Host Type has changed to Media....

If you look at the 2 screen shots on the attached word document, the first one is prior to going into the properties and the second is when you exit out of the properties.

I am just wondering if someone can offer any advice as to;

a) why it does not appear in the Media Server folder under Host Properties
b) why it shows as a client until you look at the properties.

Any help would be much appreciated in my quest to get used to Netbackup

Andy

On your console -
open up the properties of your master server
choose servers on the left hand side
Add the name of the media server to both windows on the right hand side.
It should now show up as a media server.

You just have to tell netbackup that it is one.

the new media server should be in the bp.conf of your master server as either a SERVER = or MEDIA_SERVER = entry. nbemmcmd -listhosts on your master should show the media server also. have a look at this and post the output here.

Have you entered the license keys on the media server, when you installed it?

After installation of netbackup media server have you done the following:

1.  Add SERVER and MEDIA_SERVER entries in master server bp.conf file.  It should be something like

SERVER = <new media server name>
MEDIA_SERVER = <new media server name>

2.  Register the new media server to EMM database by issuing the following command:

its a contineous command:

nbemmcmd -addhost -machinename <new media server name> -machinetype media -operatingsystem rs6000 -masterserver <master server name> -netbackupversion <version number>

3.  Check if EMM database is listing new media server - nbemmcmd -listhost

4.   Restart netbackup services on master and media server to reflect the changes to netbackup.

So was looking on our Master server (which is Windows by the way) and there is no bp.conf file..........

This is the contents of the bp.conf file on the media server i am trying to get working ..........

baghetti:/root> more /opt/openv/netbackup/bp.conf
SERVER = nbcluster
SERVER = baghetti
SERVER = badoer
SERVER = rokr0103
SERVER = lisburn
CLIENT_NAME = baghetti
EMMSERVER = nbcluster
MEDIA_SERVER = badoer
MEDIA_SERVER = rokr0103
MEDIA_SERVER = baghetti
MEDIA_SERVER = rosier

I have logged onto the master server and run the nbemmcmd -listhosts and this is what it comes up with....Everything else is working fine it is just this one media server it does not seem to find.

C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\bin\admincmd>nbemmcmd.exe -listhosts
NBEMMCMD, Version:6.5.3.1
The following hosts were found:
server dc1nbcluster
cluster DC1NBCLUSTER
master lisburn
media LIMERICK
ndmp dc2tcgfiler1
ndmp dc2tcgfiler2
virtual_machine tcg17532a.live.co-op.local
media badoer
media antrim
ndmp dc1tcgfiler1
ndmp dc1tcgfiler2
media rokr0103.co-op.co.uk
media rosier
Command completed successfully.

After adding in media server list need to restart master server NB services.

After restarting services once you select Activity monitor you will find newly added server in right pane.

What was the fix?

The fix was what J.Hinchcliffe suggested. I open up the actual Master server properties and in the SERVERS section added this media server and it all worked from there.

So thanks once again to everyone who offered help/suggestions.
