Having been using this script for some time, I find that as a general observation, I see an average of 1 or two errors for a tape PER drive is 'probably' acceaptable.  Of course, this is 'on average', you may dig down and find a tape produces just 1 error that is 100% unacptable.

So looking at a few tapes with more than 4 errors (remember, 2 per drive is 4) ...

BR5717

NetBackup Drive - HP.ULTRIUM4-SCSI.000
  BR5717 (       4 )
NetBackup Drive - HP.ULTRIUM4-SCSI.001
  BR5717 (       4 )

BR5371

NetBackup Drive - HP.ULTRIUM4-SCSI.000
  BR5371 (       1 )
NetBackup Drive - HP.ULTRIUM4-SCSI.001
  BR5371 (       5 )

BR5670

NetBackup Drive - HP.ULTRIUM4-SCSI.000
  BR5670 (       4 )
NetBackup Drive - HP.ULTRIUM4-SCSI.001
  BR5670 (       2 )

BR5379

NetBackup Drive - HP.ULTRIUM4-SCSI.000
  BR5379 (       3 )
NetBackup Drive - HP.ULTRIUM4-SCSI.001
  BR5379 (       3 )

What you make of these results I will leave up to you.

Personally I would pull the tapes that are showing 5+ errors - as these are high compared to the other tapes which show just 1 or 2.

Drive .001 didn't like BR5371 much (x5 of the x6 errors for this tape was in that one drive), but that is assuming that drives and tapes are used equally (we have to make some assumptions unfortunately).

The drives show arond an average of two errors per tape - so no one drive is particularly standing out, but it is possible that drives wear at around the same rate (they should do as they should be used evenly) which would hide this.

Hope this helps.

Number of NON-ACTIVE media that:
3 - are currently EXPIRED
BR5379 expired 12/20/2011 00:00 (FROZEN)
ECL932 expired 12/26/2011 10:55 (FROZEN)
ECL947 expired 02/08/2012 20:48 (FROZEN)

If that is the case, then they are "EXPIRED" because the data on them has passed its retention period as opposed to anything else. That is what this expires/expired is referring to not that they are now ready to be physically be replaced.

The only reason that they are still on this list is because they are FROZEN & that could be a problem. You have a fair few frozen tapes - have you had drive issues recently? Have a very good look at the tapes themselves - are they physically damaged, case eased open, dislodged leader pin, write-protect tab over (even slightly). It may very well be that these FROZEN media will need replacing.

***EDIT***

Basically, the media summary report here is providing you with the status of all currently assigned media (i.e. those that have data on them).

It shows how many are FULL first & sorts them by when the data on them is going to expire - after that point they will be available for use by NetBackup again.

It also shows ACTIVE media - i.e. those that aren't yet full & can still have data appended to them by NetBackup. It also sorts these by when the last item of data on them is going to expire. This will change as soon as more data is written onto them.

It also identifies those tapes that are FROZEN - NetBackup will not write to these media again unless you unfreeze them, but you need to know why they were frozen in the first place - if frozen because they are damaged & you try to re-use them then you could end up damaging your tape drive(s)

Good advice from Andy to follow.

If the question is relating to are they ready to be physically replaced, you could assess this from possible number of mounts and against how long they have been used in the netbackup environment (Created field and First Mount field)

This info can be got from the Media Volumes view and if you add the relevant columns to the layout within Netbackup Admin Console.

Or command line

# vmquery -m ECL947

for more options see man page for vmquery

http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=HOWTO43762

Also...

# nbemmcmd -listmedia -mediaid ECL94

gives a lot of output

I am still working on determining why those tape are frozen.

It is difficult (basically impossible) to find out why a tape is frozen if it has happened some time ago and there is nothing in the logs anymore.

Suggestion: Unfreeze the 3 expired, frozen tapes.
Create a TEST or SUSPECT pool. Put these tapes in the new pool.
Ensure you have bptm log(s) on media server(s).
Do some test backups to this test pool.

On the media server(s) there is this file :

/usr/openv/netbackup/db/media/errors  (unix)

<install path>\veritas\netbackup\db\media\errors   (windows)

If you have a Solaris server, download the tperr script from here :

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/downloads/tperrsh-script-solaris-only

If the media server is Solaris run and the errors file is from a media server that is in the same NBU environment, run

tperr.sh -a

If you have copied the errors file to a solaris server that is not a media server run

tperr.sh -a -f /path/to/file/errors -n

OR

post up the errors files and I'll do it for you.  Full instructions in the link.

Thx,

Martin

Having been using this script for some time, I find that as a general observation, I see an average of 1 or two errors for a tape PER drive is 'probably' acceaptable.  Of course, this is 'on average', you may dig down and find a tape produces just 1 error that is 100% unacptable.

So looking at a few tapes with more than 4 errors (remember, 2 per drive is 4) ...
