Netbackup Master Server on Windows 2008?

Nicky_Crancher
Level 2
We are in the process of migrating our  Master server from a Windows 2003 X86 standard server. Would it be wrong to Install the Master server on a Windows 2008 X64 Server or has it been successfully deployed?  Headache or better performance?

Our setup:
Clients: 300, Windows, Unix, Exchange, SQL etc..
Separate Media Server on Windows 2003 X86 Enterprise
IBM Library connected with Fibre links.

Any suggestions?

Many Thanks

Nicky

Which NetBackup version?

Great idea to migrate to W2008 X64. Our in-house master server is W2008 - not a single problem.
Just confirm compatibility and ensure you have the 64-bit installation:

CD Image NB_6.5.4.Winx64_CD.exe provides a media refresh to 6.5.4 for Veritas NetBackup (tm) servers and clients only on Windows 2008 and Windows 2008 Server Core x64 platforms, and for new installs on Windows 2003 x64 platforms
 http://support.veritas.com/docs/326387
Note:  This CD also contains the x64 Java console and uses VSS as the default option for Windows Open File Backup (WOFB).

Compatibility:
NBU 6.5: ftp://exftpp.symantec.com/pub/support/products/NetBackup_Enterprise_Server/325328.pdf

NBU 7: ftp://exftpp.symantec.com/pub/support/products/NetBackup_Enterprise_Server/337048.pdf

Using catalog backup and recovery to transfer NetBackup catalogs between Windows master servers as part of a hardware refresh
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/337969.htm

And read all the TechNotes regarding W2008 installations, e.g:
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/318040.htm
(there are more TechNotes, just Google them..)

Thanks Marianne,

We are running version 6.5.5 at present on our Master and Media Servers, but soon to move onto Netbackup 7 after a successful migration.

My plan is:
  1. Install Windows 2008 X64 Base OS
  2. Assign it with the same IP and host name (Initially isolated)
  3. Installed the Netbackup X64 Software
  4. Run a full hot catalog backup
  5. Shutdown the old server
  6. Bring the X64 new server online and add the media server.
  7. Restore the Catalog from tape using the DR file.

Nicky.

Thats the same way we did our upgrade, didnt have any problems. We also copied accross the netbackup DR folder with the catalogue just incase. Not to mention a disk based catalogue backup too, just to have a little more peace of mind :).
