Error code 40 is a network error.
So, the NETWORK failed, not NetBackup.
To understand where in the backup transfer process the backup failed, you will need logs on the client and on the media server:
On client: bpbkar (if this is filesystem backup)
On media server: bptm and bpbrm
This will only help to point you in the right direction - identify if issue is on client or media server side.
From there you have to concentrate on the cause - anything network-related at OS and hardware layer, right up to the network switch.

More details please..
what is the netbackup and OS versions in client, media and Master servers
provide the details status of the failed job
also try increasing the client read timeout and see how it goes..

Kindly let us know what is client read timeout value set on media and client.
Below is the location from where you can get the value:-
1) Admin console->Media server host properties->Select media server->Timeout->Client read timeout->If value is set 300 then change it to 1800
2) Admin console->Client server host properties->Select client->Timeout->Client read timeout->If value is set 300 then change it to 1800
Enable logs at verbose 5 as below:-
1) On Client:- bpbkar
Goto BAR GUI of client->File->Netbackup Client Properties->Troubleshooting->Debug level->General->set value to 2 and Verbose value to 5
2) On media server:- bptm,bpbrm
Admin console->Media server hot properties->Logging->bptm->set value to 5
Admin console->Media server hot properties->Logging->bpbrm->set value to 5
Then kindly initiate the backup and if backup again fails then kindly upload the above logs as requested, so that we can further check where issue exactly lies in network.
