Hi,
Is it possible to divide the drives of Robot for more then one Backup applications? For example- Out of 15 drives, can we allocate/control 5 drives from Netbackup, 5 from Backup Exec. and 5 from Networker-Legato or some other backup software? I mentioned these three because I know only these three software's name. But basically I want to know if we can SHARE ONE Robot among various Backup Software or it has to be dedicated to only one Backup Appli. at a time? James Dunn's answer is VERY HELPFUL but I want to know if someone actually did this or not or have some other ideas. I am sure the answer will be helpful to all of us. To seprate the tapes of both applications, we can create the volume pool-assign the tapes of other Backup applications to that pool and NEVER use that pool in netbackup so NB can scan the tapes but will not use them.

yes, StorageTek allows you to do this with their acsls software. I have seen this done in a powderhorn silo but I do not know the configuration procedures.

Falgun,

Each program scans the library, and will think that all the tapes in the library are part of each programs inventory. I have never heard of a way to LOCK the robot from the other program. Even if there were a way it would be a managment nightmare.

Falgun,

If STK's L700 is the only choice you have, then ACSLS is the answer (I had two L700e before). But do note the additional overheads, cost and single point of failure when you introduce ACSLS into your backup architecture (although there's a HA version of it).

If having mutiple robot host controller of same/different backup software is a requirement/direction due to whatever reason, it's better to get a tape library that's able to perform native library partition (configured at tape library level and present to each backup software as a standalone tape library) so that you have one less headache.
