Hi,
Did anyone of you have the step by step procedure for upgrading the Media server and client. If so, please share. Even if you don't have the procedures in handy just provide me the link where i can get the requested details. Any help in this regards would be highly apreciated.
The Media servers are running with W2K8 64bit Enterprise Edition and Exchange 2007 (CCR). Currently it has NBU 6.5.4 and needs to be upgraded to 6.5.6. Will there be any impact for exchange or backups after the upgrade....
Please advise and help.
Regards,
Saravana

Follow best practice:
Upgrade the master server first to 6.5.6, then the media servers, clients/agents and then Admin consoles.
All relevant documentation for any impact to running applications should be documented here

Ensure no backups running/stop NBU services
Extract on media server(s) and client(s)
Run the setup

I recommended to upgrade to 7.0.1
It's very easy process (Next, Next Finish) except for some additional patch for duplicates jobs and vltrun commands (EEB Availables).
Follow the best practices and installation guides I do the upgrade and running my production on the same day. Don't lose anything.

Dont forget taking Catalog backups - very important!

Thank you all for the responses.... do i need to purchase separate/extra license for upgrading 7.0.1. Already the Master server(Solaris 9) has been upgraded to 6.5.6.... and my client is planning to upgrade the 2 other media servers(which is also CCR - exchange servers) and clients to 6.5.6.... I don't know how they will take if i recommend them to go for 7.0.1
Can't i perform GRT backup after upgrading to 6.5.6? Is it a bug....

Hi Saravana,
Good to see you back here again.
If you want to upgrade your client you'll need to get an upgrade notification from Symantec. If your client's maintenance contract is up to date they/you can phone customer support and request this. This basically upgrades your licenses to 7, which allows you to download the latest media from FileConnect.
Please note, its not simply click, next, next. You have to plan and prepare your environment. Please see the upgrade portal for the steps required. You'll need to run nbcc, check your ndbd consistency etc. You may find the details here http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH74584
I've not seen any mention of issues with GRT in 6.5.6 http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH129635, but maybe Stefan70 can describe his issue in more detail.

Hi Riaan,
:) Glad to see you again in the forum....
I think, the client's maintenance contract is up to date. May be i can check with them in the morning.
In-fact the customer upgraded the master server from 6.5.4 to 6.5.6 about two days back & planning to upgrade other media servers during the weekend.... I thought upgrade can be done easily... & i'm little bit frightened after seeing all these replies.... (GRT won't work on 6.5.6)...
What should i do if they are not ready to for 7.0.1.... Can i go ahead and install 6.5.6? If i go for 6.5.6 then GRT backup will be an head-ache...right?
What business justification can be given to the customer in order to convenience them and upgrade to 7.0.1. (May be i can give the above point as bottleneck in 6.5.6) & what other issues with 6.5.6...

NBU 6.5.4 is giving lot of problems on windows 2008 64 bit R2...such as System state backup failing, network connectivity error and etc...that's the reason we planned to upgrade but looks like it will take some time to finalize the version for upgrade....??? :(

Hi,
Ok well 2008R2 is only supported from 6.5.5, so having gone to 6.5.6 is good. If you're not confident about 6.5.6 for exchange, then just leave them on 6.5.4 if they're working 100%. Apply the 6.5.6 to 2008R2 clients only. Unless of course exchane is running on 2008R2, then you'll have to upgrade.
Below are all the new features you can tell your client about.
7.0

Hi All,
We upgraded from NBU 6.5.4 to 6.5.6 in all servers - Master, Media and Clients on 17th Dec & don't find any problems so far. Checked GRT backup as well and we were able to restore individual mails, mailbox, calendar.... & etc. Between we have not taken any additional steps or procedures for the upgrade & everything went successfully.
At times the exchange backups are failing with the status code - 1 & opened a case with Symantec to fix the problem. Otherwise all ok.

Saravana

Saravana, it seems that you have followed Stuart Green's advice?

Don't you agree that Stuart should get the Solution? (You get no points for marking your own post as solution...)

Hmmmm.... Yes, some sort of...Followed the same steps as mentioned by Stuart.
Sorry, i was not aware of that i won't get points marking my post as solution. Thanks for your note :)..
