Status 24 when running a backup

I am having an issue with a Oracle Backup running the rman script it gives us status 24.  The parent jobs says that it is active but every child job gives us status 24.  In the Netbackup console it tells us  “Unable to write progress log </xxxxxx/16739.0.1240938218> on client xxxx.”

I looked in the location for those files and they all have “0” length maybe that is our problem?  Anybody have any ideas.  Nothing has changed on the netbackup end or on the client that we know of.

Do you have any free disk space on the volume the log directories are located?

Status 24 is usually a socket/connection error, which could be network issues.
Any changes in your network topology recently?

Might be worth adding /etc/hosts entries and seeing if that resolves the issue.

Hi kproehl,

Did you have successful Oracle backup on this client in the past?  Or was it the first time you run RMAN backup through NetBackup on this client?

Did you have NetBackup upgraded or patched recently?

Read this document and see if it helps: (http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/302208.htm)

"The upgrading or patching of the NetBackup client and NetBackup Oracle extension on an Oracle host must occur simultaneously and must be performed while all of the Oracle instances are down. If the Oracle instances are not down, a binary mismatch will result between the prior version of the NetBackup library files that are still part of the running Oracle process space and the new version of the NetBackup libraries and programs that have been installed.

This results in a configuration and network connectivity that appears correct but in backups and restores that fail with unusual messages."

Error 24 may happed due to port block form client side & because of that NBU Master server unable to contact client. If it is windows machin restart Netbackup client service & eventhough the problem ramain same reboot will required.
