Hi,

We have veritas netbackup 6.5.2A for backup soln which is on windows 2003 server . Currently we are taking LAN backups, we have plans to go for SAN + LAN backups on new tape library.

Is it possible to transfer old LAN licences on new tape library ?

When upgrading to a new tape library, is it necessary to obtain a new NetBackup License Key?

By LAN licenses I assume you mean NetBackup Client licenses.
For each client listed under Host Properties/Clients in the Netbackup Admin Console you should have a Netbackup Standard Client License.

This will allow you to backup this client over the network to the master server for storage on tape or disk.

For SAN backups you need an Enterprise Client license for the SAN Client backup method, which of course uses your SAN infrastructure. look here for more info:

LAN licenses and tape libraries are separate entities in licensing. You may need additional licenses for more drives and if you go for shared storage option.
But you dont need to 'transfer' licenses.

You should look at licenses you have got and maybe also if you could look online at the licensing portal to manage your licenses.

Hi Stuart,

Thanks for update.

We have NetBackup Client licenses for 2 drive SCSI connection tape library. Now we have plan for New 2 drive Fiber connection tape library which will take SAN +LAN backups. So currently we dont have SAN licences those we have to buy that is ok .

But is it possible to tranfer existing  LAN NetBackup Client licenses for 2 drive SCSI connection tape library to New 2 drive Fiber connection tape library ?

or we can use existing NetBackup Client  LAN licenses ?

Regards,
Mekkalki

SAN Client Deployment document states "

The SAN Client takes advantage of Fiber Channel Storage Area Network (SAN) connections to

perform a fast backup of a client machine directly to a Media Server, moving data transfers off the

LAN and away from conflicting traffic. The SAN Client provides a high performance data transfer

for the client and offloads the LAN with the backup traffic.

As a general rule SAN Client should be deployed selectively

on servers where the data volumes are such that LAN backup within a reasonable time period is impractical."

NetBackup Client license and Library Based Tape Drive license are two separate entities.
If you want to change the SCSI tape drives to SAN attached tape drives, you can use the same Library Based Tape Drive license key(s). If you want to share them, you will need the Shared Storage Option license.
Normal clients that you want to attach to the SAN will need Enterprise Client license - your local Symantec reseller should be able to tell you if the Client license can be upgraded to Enterprise Client license.
Your current license key on the Master must be 'NetBackup Enterprise Server' to allow SSO and Enterprise Client.
