What is a SAN media server and a client
as per the SSO guide
"SANmedia servers are NetBackup media servers that back up their own data.SAN
media servers cannot back up the data that resides on other clients."
I found some references where this statement was contradictory so can some please put some light on it.

The statement you quoted from SSO guide explains about SAN media server perfectly.
SAN media servers will have secondary storage devices connected and can write just their own data.
A Sanclient is a NBU client which have FibreTransport service active on it. In case of SAN clients, backup data will be sent to storage devices through a NBU media server over SAN using Fibre Transport method. Backup traffic occurs over SAN and administrative traffic occurs over LAN. SAN clients uses fewer resources compared to SAN media servers.
