[root@localhost /]# /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bpclntcmd -self
yp_get_default_domain failed: (12) Local domain name not set
NIS does not seem to be running: (1) Request arguments bad
gethostname() returned: localhost.localdomain
host localhost.localdomain: localhost.localdomain at 127.0.0.1
aliases:     localhost.localdomain     127.0.0.1
getfqdn(localhost.localdomain) returned: localhost.localdomain

it is resolving the loopback IP address... with this case...

you can trigger the backups and restore form Mastere server fine.

any client iniciated jobs would not work... backups/restores etc..

if you are not using the DNS, yes. host name resolution is required in all Master , media and clients

along with the host names the entires in the SERVER bp.conf (for unix) registory key ( in Windows) is also important to have the successfull backup and restore.

bpcltncmd -hn <hostname>

bpclntcmd -ip <IP addresss>

if they resolve the names and IP  , that indicates indicates host and IP address resolution is fine and backup will get successfull.

So may i think that add the CLIENT_NAME resolution to the /etc/hosts is not necessary, only add the maser resolution to the client /etc/hosts is necessary.

When i change the client_name .....

But i have not add the host name resolution to the client, and the backup job run also successfully. Why?

You have changed client name, not master server or media server name, right?

So, master can connect to new client hostname, client can resolve master server IP address to a valid SERVER name.

Life is good - nothing else needed for successful backup.

NO,i have not change the client hostname,i only change the CLIENT_NAME in bp.conf,The test result is: if a client changed CLIENT_NAME in the bp.conf, not change the client hostname,it is not need to add the new resovle to the /etc/hosts on the client.
