Which media type do you set an LTO 3 drive to?

I have a new LTO 3 drive (PowerVault 110T- LTO3). Which is basically and IBM drive. I want it to still read my old LTO 1 tapes and I would like it to use LTO-2 tapes for now and then LTO-3 tapes later if I need it. What do I set the media type to? I currently have it set to hcart and I successfully read my old tapes. I am going to get some LTO 2 tapes and see if it writes to them. I am however not clear on what the the correct setting is for the media type and if I set it to hcart will lose some functionality?

I don't understand what you mean exactly. I assume you mean I can set it to either hcart1, hcart2 or hcart3. Is this correct?

That is correct, you can use either of the three for your Half inch LTO-3 cartridges. As a best practise you may want to use hcart3 for LTO-3 but it doesnt have to be hcart3 only.
 
Make sure you set your storage unit to same type as media or vice versa.
