We are planning on migrating our master ( currently running on a symantec appliance - 5220 ) to a separate red hat linux master server. Can this be done by using catalog backup and recovery or do we need symantec to do this ?
The appliances run linux , so these are the same primary platform. Has anyone attempted this in production. We are on 7.5.
some of the tech notes mention about keeping the same ip and hostname , but dont talk about moving off an appliance to a regular server

Yes, you can use this TN to migrate to Linux server:
Using catalog backup and recovery to transfer NetBackup catalogs between UNIX or Linux master servers as part of a hardware refresh
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH77448
The main thing to be aware of is the different installation path and Catalog path on the Appliance.
You will have to create symbolic links on the new master to match the Appliance catalog paths before you start the catalog restore.
If you want to keep the Appliance as Media server with the current hostname and migrate the master server portion off the appliance to a new master with a different hostname, you will need assistance from a Symantec consulting partner. http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH31385
