ndmp storage units and 'traditional' storage units not using same tapes ?

Hi,

I've set up a new environment (NetBackup 7.5.0.6) which has 1 x Master/Media server, and has a mix of NDMP backups (NetApp filer) and Windows client/agent backups.

I've set up the NDMP storage units and 'normal' storage units and all my test backups work absolutely fine...so basically I have a test MS_Windows policy using a standard tape storage unit, and a test NDMP policy using an NDMP storage unit ....we have Shared Storage Option (SSO).

My test policies (NDMP and MS_Windows) are both set to use the same volume pool and have exactly the same retention, and I'd like them to use the same tape ....LT05 tapes, not big backups so plenty of space on tape for both currently.

Have tried running both policies at same time ...each writes to a different volume.

Have tried running one policy after the other has finished successfully ....chooses a different tape every time.

If possible I'd like these policies to write to the same tapes, as although (when in Production) the NDMP will be quite large, the Windows backups won't be and i don't want them to use different tape volumes.

thanks

Configuring unrestricted media sharing

Unrestricted media sharing means that all NetBackup media servers and NDMP

hosts in your NetBackup environment can share media for writing.

Note: Do not use unrestricted media sharing and media sharing server groups. If

you use both, NetBackup behavior is undefined.

To configure unrestricted media sharing

1 In the NetBackup Administration Console, in the left pane, expand

NetBackup Management > Host Properties > Master Servers.

2 In the right pane, double-click the master server.

3 Select Media

4 Select Enable Unrestricted Media Sharing for All Media Servers.

If you allow unrestricted allow media sharing in your NetBackup environment,

you do not need to create media sharing groups.

5 Click OK.

Apologies, forgot to mention ...

We've already changed the scsi tape reserve on the NetApp filers to 'scsi' from 'off'

'options tape.reservations scsi'

For every used media, there is a media owner assigned to it.

For NDMP backups media owner will be NDMP host. and for any Windows client/agent backups media owner will be Media Server name through which the backup has happened,

=========================

Enable unrestricted media sharing for all media servers

The Enable unrestricted media sharing for all media servers property controls

media sharing, as follows:

■ To allow all NetBackup media servers and NDMP hosts in your NetBackup

environment to share media for writing, select this property. Do not

configure server groups for media sharing.

■ To restrict media sharing to specific server groups, clear this property, then

configure media server groups and backup policies to use media sharing.

■ To disable media sharing, clear this property and do not configure media

server groups.

By default, media sharing is disabled. (The property is cleared and no server

groups are configured.)
