Intelligent Disaster Recovery:

  •  Basic system recovery: Technically, it follows the same process as Manual System Recovery, but it automates the various steps, thereby decreasing the chance of error.
  • Tape-based system recovery: This option is recommended for customers that are following the traditional process of backing up to tape or disk-to-disk-to-tape as it needs to do tape restores.
  • Faster than manual recovery: As it automates the steps involved in disaster recovery, it is much faster than manual disaster recovery.
  • For non-mission-critical servers: It is faster and more efficient than manual disaster recovery, but it still follows the same steps so it can be prone to errors.
  • Restores to similar hardware platform: The hardware must be identical to the original computer except for hard disks, video cards, and network interface cards.
  • Small budget: IDR is recommended for customers that have no disaster recovery plan in place and would like the safety net of Automatic Basic System Recovery.
  • Needs Backup Exec Media Server: IDR is an option that can be purchased and runs on the Backup Exec Media Server.
  • Licensed per media server: IDR Option is licensed per Backup Exec Media Server and helps you protect unlimited client servers.

Backup Exec System Recovery:

  •  Advanced system recovery: It uses a much advanced technology and it is much quicker and more robust as compared to IDR .
  • Disk-based system recovery: This option is for clients that are doing backups to disk or disk-to-disk-to-tape. It is a prerequisite that the system needs to be backed up to disk.
  • Much faster than manual recovery or IDR: It consists of two steps only¿selecting the recovery point and recovering the entire system¿therefore it is extremely fast.
  • For mission-critical servers: Backup Exec System Recovery uses a different and more advanced approach, so is extremely reliable and much faster than IDR. It is recommended for mission-critical servers.
  • Hardware-independent: With Backup Exec System Recovery, it does not matter which hardware the downed device will be restored to! You can restore not only to new hardware but to a virtual environment as well.
  • ROI-centric: Backup Exec System Recovery is recommended for customers seeking Advanced System Recovery. Although it costs more than IDR, it offers great ROI since you can restore anytime, from anywhere to virtually any device.
  • Complementary solution: Backup Exec and Backup Exec System Recovery give you complete data and systems protection and recovery. However, customers can take advantage of Backup Exec System Recovery even if they do not have a Backup Exec Media Server in their environment.
  • Licensed per server: Each server needs a separate license for Backup Exec System Recovery.

Summary
Backup Exec System Recovery is recommended for customers that are looking for a Windows disk-based, bare-metal system recovery solution for business critical servers as it is incredibly fast, hardware independent and can be deployed in environments that might or might not have Backup Exec for data protection. Backup Exec's Intelligent Disaster Recovery Option is recommended for clients that are looking for Windows or NetWare tape-based system recovery solution for non-mission-critical servers and have a Backup Exec Media Server in their environment.
