BESR Issuing SQL Backup Command?

Everytime our backup job runs, we get errors in the event log saying

BACKUP failed to complete the command BACKUP DATABASE [database name]. 

How does BESR backup SQL?  Does it use VSS and copies the SQL database files (mdf, ldf, ndf) or does it issue the backup command through SQL?

Also, the server is running ACT!  Have anyone had any success backing up the ACT databases using BESR?

If you enable the use full vss option in thr backup kob besr uses vss, othetwise it takes a simple copy of the file. Afaik it doesnt use SQL to backup the database.
