How can i set up alerts on the management console to set up alerts to go email when a back or something of that sort fails.

Understand, the SSR-MS itself does not send notifications when a backup job fails on a client; the SSR agent on the client does that. To configure the client for e-mail notification when events like a failed backup please review, 'Configuring a client option policy for computers,' on page 204 in the PDF located from the following link: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=DOC3912
