Speeding up my backup

HHMod

I'm currently using System Recovery 2010 to backup the following virtual machine running on esxi,

  • OS: Windows Server 2003
  • Memory: 4GB (low utilization)
  • Processor: much more than needed
  • Storage: 4 15k Sas drives (low utilization)
  • Network: 1Gbit (low utilization)

Its set to backup over the network to a share on the following computer,

  • OS: Windows 7
  • Memory:16GB
  • Processor: much more than needed
  • Storage: Single Sata drive
  • Network: 1Gbit (low utilization)

There is roughly 150gb of data to backup and it takes over 24 hours to complete.  Thats way to long in my mind.  Now for my questions...

  1. Is that slow compared to what others are experiancing over a network?
  2. What can I do to speed it up?
  3. What things could be slowing it down?
  4. Are there articles/papers on performance?
  5. Right now I have "Verify recovery point" (or whatever its called) turned on, how much does this slow it down?
  6. If I dont have that turned on what are my risks?

  1. That does seem very slow but it clearly depends on your environment (network path etc)
  2. Check the network path (NIC drivers/settings etc). Try different destination if possible. This may also help: http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH125631
  3. see above
  4. see above
  5. This depends on your environment, amount of data etc. Only one way to find out!
  6. You could find that you have a corrupt backup and cannot restore. Disabling verifying is not recommended.

Dear Sir:

Even though the document is not targeted directly to System Recovery, you may want to review the Performance Tuning Guide that we use for Backup Exec.

Here is the link to the download:

Backup Exec 2010 Tuning, Performance, and Troubleshooting Guide
http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3276

Hope it helps.
