BE2012 - disaster recovery from tape not disk

Previously you were only able to do “intelligent disaster recovery” backups to disk and obviously only recoveries from disk using system recovery. With the new version of backup exec 2012 and system recovery you have the option to write “intelligent disaster recovery” backups to tape and disk.

The question is how the process will work if you need to do a “intelligent disaster recovery” of a server from tape. When you boot the sever from the “Disaster Recovery Disk” is it possible to browse the tapes and start the recovery from tape and not disk?

Are you talking about recovering media server or the remote server? If you are recovering remote server you can recover it by using the tape drive connected to the media server. You need the  disaster recovery information file (.DR) if the computer to be recovered was backed up to a tape device.

IDR, now named as SDR (Simplified Disaster Recovery) allows (and allowed as well) restore from tape/disk, whereas System Recovery was and still is a disk-based product

Please confirm if I understand this correctly

Option 1: Media server “SDR”

You need to do a SDR backup of the media server to disk.

For the recovery you will boot the new media server with the “Disaster Recovery Disk” and restore the media server from the backup located on the disk where you backed up the media sever.

Option 2: Remote backup exec 2012 server “SDR”

SDR backup of the Remote backup exec 2012 client server to tape on the media server.

For the recovery you will boot the remote client with the “Disaster Recovery Disk” and restore the client server from the backup located on the tape located on the media sever. Will you still be needing the disaster recovery information file (.DR)?

If recovering from tape, .DR file is a must for recovering via SDR

Thank you. I assume that my previous comment was correct then?
