MAPI Version of Backup Exec???

Brett_Emery

When following the Microsoft article to prevent unauthorized versions of Outlook from accessing an Exchange server, Veritas Backup Exec no longer can backup mailboxes.

Here are the MS articles:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/exchange/EXBPA/69e7ac7b-9f0b-4b0d-879a-334c1b41242b.mspx

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;288894

I've set the "Disable MAPI Clients" registry key to "-11" to prevent all versions of Outlook prior to 2003.

What MAPI version does Backup Exec claim to be?

Hi Brett,

Backup Exec does not require any specific MAPI version. All it needs is a MAPI32.dll to be present on the Exchange server, as mailbox backups are done using MAPI.

Try copying the MAPI32.dll from your Outlook 2003 CD file to the C:\Program Files\VERITAS\Backup Exec\RANT and then check if you can see all the mailboxes.

Thank you for the reply! However you might have misunderstood the problem.

Veritas Backup Exec uses the MAPI interface to backup mailboxes, correct???

What's happening is when setting the "Disable MAPI Clients" registry entry, Exchange is blocking Backup Exec from accessing the mailboxes because it doesn't meet the MAPI version restriction.

I need to know what MAPI version Backup Exec claims to Exchange so I can include that versus exclude it.

Please review those Microsoft articles for a better understanding of the problem please, and thanks again!

Hi Brett!

To find out the version of client being used by Backup exec, please follow the following. The client version listed for the account with which you connect to the mailboxes to backup is the required client version.

Extract from the MSKBA given by you:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=288894

Use Exchange System Manager to determine the version of MAPI clients that connect to the mailbox store. In Exchange System Manager, locate the Logons container of the mailbox store. The Client Version column displays the version of the MAPI clients that are connected to the mailbox store.

Important The MAPI client version is listed in Exchange System Manager as X.0.Y.Z. This version must be entered as X.Y.Z in the registry value. For example, if Exchange System Manager lists the MAPI client version as 5.0.2819.0, enter 5.2819.0 in the Disable MAPI Clients registry value.

Important Server-side Exchange components also use MAPI to log on. Some components report their client version as an Exchange build number. Therefore, avoid restricting 6.x.x on Exchange 2000 computers or on Exchange 2003 computers.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for the information regarding determining the MAPI version by examining the Logons folder.

I see several versions of 11.0.6352.0, which is our Outlook 2003 clients.

I also see a few “System Attendant” with a MAPI version of 6.0.7226.0, is this Backup Exec???

Hello Brett,

In Backup Exec (tm) 8.x for Windows NT and Windows 2000, Backup Exec needed a MAPI client for email notification and Exchange mailbox backups/restores.

Backup Exec 9.x and 10.0 no longer require MAPI for Exchange mailbox backups and restores but still require a MAPI client to send MAPI email notification.
