Optimal Settings for SDLT II

I'm trying to find the optimal setting for my current drive. Here's the situation

Backup Device : ADIC SCALAR 24 library with 2 SDLT II drives
SCSI card: Adaptec 39320A Ultra 320 (each drive is on a separate channel)
Backup Server : HP DL360G4p 4GB RAM
OS: Windows 2000 SP4
Backup Software: BE 9.1 w/latest patches
Target backup: DOMINO mail files(about 2TB) on a server connected to a private 1GB network with a dedicated NIC

Current Drive settings:
Block Size (per device) - 64k
Buffer Size (per device) - 128k
Buffer count - 10
High Water mark - 0

Read single block - OFF
Write single block - OFF
Read SCSI pass-through mode - OFF
Write SCSI pass-through mode - OFF

What's the max thruput can I expect with this setup and what can I change to improve it?

Thank You

Hello,

Please see the technote for BE device configuration:

How to troubleshoot issues with a Robotic Library or Tape Drive in Backup Exec 9.x and 10.x

Those settings look pretty good,

When the backups are running, can you hear the drive "shoeshining" or does it just humm along?

What kind of throughput are you getting?Message was edited by:

I'm getting about 1.9GB/min per drive, which seem to be almost the max thruput for SDLT II uncompressed.
However I'm getting a lot of SOFT WRITE ERRORS about 300000 per 350GB written.

Hello,

You could check for the following basics:
- The latest Drivers for the version are Installed.
- The SCSI Id of the Device lie between 2-5.
- The Changer should have a lower SCSI ID than the Drive.
- The RSM Service should be stpped and Deaktivated.

For the Soft Errors Issue, try using a different Tape.

Thanks
