Restore of System State - Certification Service won´t start.

Hi all,

yesterday we had to restore the Systemstate Backup of our SBS2003 Server.
Everything works fine now, but the Certification Service won´t start.
There are some errors:

Die Zertifikatdienste wurden nicht gestartet: Die Datenbankverbindung kann nicht initialisiert werden: *Certname*. Der Zeitstempel im nächsten Protokoll stimmt nicht mit dem erwarteten Zeitstempel überein. 0xc8000203 (ESE: -515).

Hello Danny,

actually I have to say that restoring a whole system with a BE backup is something I would never recommend.
The chances to manage this and get a running system afterwards were even with IDR about 40% in the past.
Today, it is even worse.
To backup a whole system and to get it restored completely in a desaster recovery case I would  recommend to purchase and to use Backup Exec System Recovery.

I always see people backing up the system state on all machines. When they are asked why they are doing it, they always answer the same: "For desaster recovery". Then the will get the same feedback from me as mentioned above.
I also got the question why there is the oppurtunity to backup systemstate. Easy answer: e.g. you will need it to restore active directory elements.

Hello Dominik,

thank you for your suggestions.
In case of a complete system estore with BE System Recovery, is it possible to use Backups from Backup Exec?
(I never used BE System Restore...)

With Help from a Microsoft MVP i was able to find a Solution.
I deleted the log and edb.chk files (in the CertLog Folder). After this the Certification Service is starting fine.

Hello Danny,

No, BESR is a another software solution, which creates its own backup files (Images) of the System.
You should check this out. It is the best you can do to be prepared for desaster recovery.
For example you are also able to convert the backups into virtual machines if you just need to bypass while changing corrupt hardware.
