the HP D2D2502 box is supporting inslide the MSL2024 tape library.
has anyone ever connected this box to a backep exec server over iscsi?

Yes, it works fine.
I have two units connected (and replicating to each other). Backup Exec just sees the device as library, you can configure the number of drives and slots you like to use.
And it is on the HCL:

I'm very against VTL. I'm very much for backup to disk. Configure the D2D to act as disk is a more ideal config IMO.
VTL is disk acting like tape. And with that, you have all the limitations of tape.
1. SCSI resets
2. LEO licensing needed or the VTL license
3. Stuck "Virtual" tapes seriously!
4. Having to tune the VTL by adding more drives to maximize throughput, which means drive reconfigurations in BE
and more...
In the end, there are reasons for a VTL, more often than not, they are for comfort levels of working with tape. There are few legitimate reasons to be using that particular function much these days, and thats why many of the VTL vendors went out of business between 2002 and now.
