RE: VCS HeartBeat

We are testing a new Cisco switch for our HA Heartbeat. We create vlans for the HA Heartbeat. Apart from failing over and running the gabconfig and lltstat, what other test can I run to validate the switch is setup/ working correctly.

This depends on what you want to test. If you want to test your Cisco vlan config for HB, then the easiest way is to assign ip addresses to your heatbeat NICs and test inter-node communication with ping.

Btw, it is recommended to use separate HB links for cluster nodes, if your Cisco is the only one device for all HB, it will be single point of failure, stopping all cluster communication in case of failure.

You could disconnect a heartbeat cable and watch the reaction of gabconfig and lltstat, also depending on the operating system you can watch the console for timeout messages. Plug the cable back in and within a couple of seconds, it should be fully operational again. The fact that you can failover only proves one of those is working.

As previously mentioned, ping works if you have IP addresses on the NICs. Just be sure to pick IPs that do not cause your internal system routing to go to the wrong place. If you are using Windows you may not be allowed to add IPs, VCS prefers that high priority links have no IP.
