We are testing an approach to FSA archiving using wild cards in the policy criteria.
The idea is that users will rename files to include either "_RET5", "_RET10", or "_RETPERM", in the name.
Each policy will use the wildcard criteria to archive files containing the above names and will be assigned to an appropriate retention rule. (Files whose name contain *_RET5* will be archived with a 5 year retention rule and so on.
The problem is that I can only assign one policy to each target. I can not create an additional target folder with the same location. Finally - even though I can assign different wildcard rules to the same policy - only 1 retention rule can be assigned to a policy.
Does anyone have any ways / ideas to achieve this goal?
Thanks,
Adam

As you are getting your users to classify the files, then why not consider Retention Folders as Tony says? Instead of renaming the file, drag them in to a folder with the appropriare retention period?
A STEP partner could right a filter for you quite quickly to Jeff's point.
Another alternative is to get your users to archive the files themselves and to chose the retention category at the time of archive. QUADROtech have recently launched a Windows Explorer shell extension to accomplish this: http://www.quadrotech-it.com/products/fsa-shell-extension/

have you looked at Retention Folders?
Might be a better way to go and avoid having to rename files.

What you are after would be the type of functionality which can be implemented by filter points:
http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5631
However, I havent heard of any 3rd party developing anything for FSA yet. Maybe a STEP partner or Symantec partner manager could comment.
Other than that, try changing the method as Tony said. It's kind of why Retention folders were created...

Because we are using this only for "record" archiving the files that need to be archived are spread across the share. The end users do not want to move/re-arrange the files structure to accommodate the archiving. I will look into the QUADROtech solution. Thank you.
