Moving Data from Windows server to NetApp CIFS

I have a 2TB partition on a Windows 2003 file server cluster with 139GB of free space and 1.4TB of associated vaulted data in my EV 9.0.3 vault.  I plan on moving this data to a NetApp CIFS share and recalling all the data once it's moved.  I know I need to do the following:

- Set up permissions for my vault service account on the NetApp filer

- Add the NetApp filer as a archiving target to EV

I plan on using FSAutlity -pm to migrate the placeholders from my windows server to the NetApp and then robocopy or SecureCopy to copy the nonvaulted data.  I have no plans at this point to vault any data on the NetApp .  I plan on recalling all the currently vaulted data back to the NetApp (once I've moved all the placeholders to the NetApp), let deduplication work it's magic, and see where we go from there.

I plan on upgrading EV to 9.0.4 R1 per recommendation from Symantec Tech Support.  They said there were some improvements made to the FSAUtility that would help with the migration process.

Question:

Do I need to assign any volume or folder policies to the NetApp target, at least initially?  I don't plan on actively archiving anything on the NetApp.

Does anyone have any success or horror stories with respect to how many threads I can get away with the FSAUtility in order to maximize my throughput on the placeholder moves?  I realize it depends on my EV server.  It's a IBM blade HS21 with two 2.66GHz processors and 4GB of RAM.  I'm trying to figure out how long of a long weekend I'm going to need to move my placeholders.  I have 2 million vaulted items in this drive totalling 1.4TB.

Thanks.

Hiya RhoSysAdmin,

Darren’s article is a good start, but you might also want to have a look at FSA Migrator which uses the CM API to fetch the items instead of a mass recall.

Hi Rho,

I would like you to have a look at Darren's blog where you should get answers to pretty much all your questions. I think..

The excerpt from it says "100'000s+ of placeholders per hour has been moved"

http://www.symantec.com/connect/blogs/file-system-archiving-enterprise-vault-v9-placeholder-migratio...

I hope that helps you.
