Moving from EV 9.0.3 to EV 10.0.3

Dear's,

I need your suggestions and best practice to move frm EV 9.0.3 to EV 10.0.3

Our existing environement hasEV 9.0.3 on windows 2008 SP2 and Exchange 2007 with around 3000 mailboxs archived , we are planning to move to exchange 2013 and EV 10.0.3 along with new SQL server on completely new hardware. As EV 9.0.3 does not support Exchange 2013 so need your suggestions.

I am planning as below:

1. Install new EV 10.0.3 along with Exchange 2013

2. Disbale all 3000 users in EV 9.0.3

3. Move all 3000 users mailboxes to exchange 2013

4. Enable archiving for users in new EV 10.0.3

5. Use move archive option to move 3000 users old archive from EV 9.0.3 to EV 10.0.3

My worry is , once I disable the users in EV 9.0.3 and enable them in EV 10.0.3 then will they able to acess the old archive from EV 9.0.3 without any issue as I would be requiring large amount of time to move 3000 users archive to EV 10.0.3 maybe a month time.

I guess there are pros and cons to using migration software

1. If you have EV installed prior to EV8, you will save some space with the new OSIS model
2. You will have all the archives converted to 64bit indexes and dont need to to do the conversions
3. A more "pristine" set up if you have old retention categories you couldnt get rid of etc
4. Good if you want to move from something like a Centera to a regular CIFs etc

The cons though are
1. You have to pay for the migration software
2. It will slow down a project especially if you can just migrate the existing stuff using SSMW
3. Each of the software has their issues and it could be further slowed down by bugs or what not
4. Typically you would also engage a partner for their time and effort and not just the software
5. If you use Legal holds and searches through DA, this will be major upheaval as none of the software, including Move Archive can transfer legal holds

I agree with Tony, the simplest thing is just to do the settings migration wizard, its fast and easy, will save a lot of time, money and effort and your project will be completed a lot quicker than doing physical migrations

Why not just use the Server Settings Migration Wizard to move EV to 10.0.3?

Archive when closed, or if user disabled, should be accessible in read only mode (throught Archive Explorer for example).

are you planning to do this with two environments in parrallel?

Exchange 2007 EV 9.0.3  and Exchange 2013 EV10.03 online both?

You could also consider Archive Shuttle which would enable this type of migration to be pretty seamless.

I don't know why you would want to go through the mess of a migration when using the Server Settings Migration Wizard can do what you need without the fuss of migrating 3000 users.  I think that would be a bit more seamless to both the end user and the admin!

Hi,

The new EV server will be deployed as a completely new infrastructure with new EV site name, new Vault Store Group, new policies and also along with new SQL server. We will decommmision the existing EV 9.0.3 servers once all the arcives has been moved to EV 10.0.3

Exchange 2007 EV 9.0.3  and Exchange 2013 EV10.03 online both?

Exchange 2007 will be removed once the mailboxes have been moved to exchange 2013.

Regarding, archive when closed, or if user disabled, should be accessible in read only mode (throught Archive Explorer for example).

Will users disbaled in EV 9.0.3  be able to access their old archived emails using the below options after their mailboxes are moved to exchange 2013 and enabled in new EV 10.0.3 but their archives will be moved later from EV 9.0.3 to EV 10.0.3 ?

Shortcuts available in Outlook.

Vault cache.

Search Vault.

Hi,

For moving archive to another site, it will take more time (i was thinking that it was moving to the same site)

A detail, you have only one AD domain, right?

I had a customer where i did the same think, but it was from one forest to another, however the process should be this one (as you said), and to make archived items available, :

1- disable archiving in ev9 for an EX2007 mailbox

2- migrate mailbox

3- provisioning and enablement in new ev10 for the EX2013 mailbox

4- Launch Move archive utility (that will move object, and will update shortcut so that outllok shortcut will point to the new ev server)

The best think should be to do this after working hours, then launck for example 100 move archive for the nigh. The day after users have all their items.

* shortcut availbale in outlook after mailbox migration may not open (until move archive is completed  step 2 of the Move Archive for the selected mailbox, the updating shortcut step)

Throught Search Vault and http//evserver/enterprisevault/archiveexplorerui.asp, items should be accessible.

Throught Vault cache (if already configured), it's should be available for users

i dont want to say wrong things, maybe somone can confirm this ;)

@Danish A, is there a particular reason to change the Site Name?  Eveything else, the new hardware, new SQL can all be accomplished with building a new site.

If you are intent on doing a migration you can use Move Archive but you may very well want to consider a migration software, here is a list of companies that can help with that.

Either way you go, you will need to do a lot of planning and work in stages.  You won't be able to target Exchange 2007 with both EV Sites at the same.

Pesonally, I would go that route and maybe I am missing something but I really can't see a good reason why you want to.
