Solved - "An administrative policy prevents you from viewing this item in the Reading Pane"

This is informational to those that have upgraded to EV 10.0.2 from EV 9 and are using Virtual Vault.

If you are creating a new Desktop Policy you no longer have the option Show content in Reading Pane - Always show content.  This is found under Advanced, Virtual Vault, Setting for Show content in Reading Pane, Value is Always show content

This was problematic for our end users.  They did not like the restriction "An administrative policy prevents you from viewing this item in the Reading Pane."

My workaround was to copy a Desktop Policy that was created when we were using EV 9.

Right click on a policy and choose Copy Policy.  Give it a new name and update all the other Settings but leave Show content in Reading Pane set to Always show content.  Run Provisioning and Synchronize mailboxes.

The users are once again able to view items in their reading pane.

Michelle,

See the ReadMeFirst documentation for EV 10.0:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC4441

In the Administration Console, the default value for the Exchange Virtual Vault advanced setting Show content in Reading Pane is now When in Vault Cache.

Show content in Reading Pane can only have the value Always show content if the following conditions apply:

  • You have upgraded from a release earlier than Enterprise Vault 10.0.
  • In the earlier release, Show content in Reading Pane had the value Always show content.

Always show content is no longer available in the Modify Setting dialog. So if Always show content is the current value and you change it, you cannot go back to it.

Always show content is no longer available because it can result in excessive downloading of the content of items. It is still possible to set the registry value VVReadingPaneContent to the value 2 (that is, the reading pane always shows the header and content of the item that is selected in Virtual Vault). We recommend that you do not set VVReadingPaneContent to the value 2.

See the following for applying the registry key:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO27866

I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the posts.

The solution as originally submitted is the global one we will use.

Right click on a policy and choose Copy Policy.  Give it a new name and update all the other Settings but leave Show content in Reading Pane set to Always show content.  Run Provisioning and Synchronize mailboxes.
