Hello

I have study the manual for Netbackup 5.1 Mp5, and uses this daily in a Winndows enviroment. But is there a 'best practice' somwhere that descibes thing to to daily or weekly to get Netbackup running smoothly.

My best advice is

1: A fully patched Master server, not just the Netbackup software but the Operating system too!
2: Hardware on the Master server and tape library firmware should be up to date and should be in good shape and if possible monitored for errors.
3: All clients should be patched.
4: Scripts should be written to monitor for backup failures and emailed to you once a day.
5: Make sure your Libray does not run out of available tapes.
and last
6: One you configure your enviroment, LEAVE THE SLEEPING DOG ALONE.

Aye, there's the rub. Once you get things configured well, the life of a Backup Administrator can get quite boring!

As for the OP's request of daily/weekly tasks, that's going to depend on your site and what needs you have.

My site, for example has the following regular tasks:
Check Scratch pool media count
Check for failed jobs and investigate
Check to make sure Vault sessions run
Handle new clients / client changes

Less frequently:
Like JD said, patches patches patches.
Hardware maintenance (annual service/PM for library, etc)
Implement new procedures, features, etc

You will find that some tasks are universal (scratch counts, failure monitoring, etc) and some are site specific (vault sessions, etc). Really it depends a lot on what your company needs.

restore, restore, restore

It's the only true test to see if what you got is what you need and this forces you to talk to the data owners to ensure that you are making or exceeding their needs.

Any fool can backup. It takes a backup admin to be able to restore.
