Freezing media

Hi everyone,

At our site we have a Windows server which is the master server and the media server. We use a StorageTek L40 tape library with 3 LTO1 drives. 1 drive is connected to the media server and the other 2 are connected to te SCSI bus of our NetApp Filer (FAS 3020 running ONTAP 7.1.1). We use these two drives with NDMP.

We used to run Windows 2000 / NBU 5.1 MP5, but my manager wanted me to upgrade to Windows 2003 / NBU 6.0 MP3. First I did a clean install of Win2003 and installed NBU 5.1 MP5. After that I did a restore of the catalog and let the system run with the 'new' OS for a few days. That went well. Finally I upgraded to NBU 6.0 MP3 and everything seemed to work ok.

"Well, good for you!"... I hear you saying.

Here it comes...After a few days we started getting the following errors. (Not every day, but it bothers me a lot!)

11/14/2006 3:05:07 AM - granted resource 001654
11/14/2006 3:05:07 AM - granted resource H26-1

11/14/2006 5:50:38 AM - Error bpbrm(pid=228) socket read failed, An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host. (10054)
11/14/2006 5:50:38 AM - end writing; write time: 06:57:50
media write error(84)

The tape is brand new so that should not be a problem.
Anyone?

Do you have RSM running on your servers? Checked the device drivers for the tape drives.

Removable Storage is disabled.

The device driver for the Tapedrive is :
Provider: IBM Corporation
Date: 7/13/2006
Version: 6.1.3.8

So that's fairly recent.

firmware 'LAN'-drive: 3CKE
firmware 'NDMP'-drive-1: 3CKE
firmware 'NDMP'-drive-2: 53J1

Try Veritas drivers...

It's something to do with the drivers as for some reason your drive is getting some sort of signal while it is writing to the tape causing it to rewind.

Saw the same when upgrading from W2k to W2k3... it's to do with the way the O/S manages the devices...

Here is a link to download the Veritas tape drive drivers for Windows:

Thanks!

The next few days I will check if it has fixed the problem.

Everyone,

After a while, the errors reoccured so yesterday I did two things:
- I uninstalled the Veritas drivers and followed the instructions in this document (http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/281616.htm) to uninstall the old IBM drivers. I reinstalled the latest IBM drivers 6.1.4.1
- I also applied Maintenance Pack 4 to the Master/Media server.

This morning, as I checked the status, all was well! :)

It really is down to luck what drivers work with NBU, as you have found out! Usually start with NBU drivers, but as you have found out you have had to revert to the IBM offerings!

This is the exact same problem I was getting and had posted in another thread......FINALLY some idea of what may be going on!! I'll be trying this today, thanks for bringing it up in the forum!!

Chad,

What thread did you post it on?

Points allways help the answers along.

I just added some additional info to the thread, and thank you for reminding me about the "helpful" points.
