NetBackup Client installation bugged out on Windows Server 2008

Genesisclimber

Hi

In my Windows Server 2008 Domain Environment, there is a Veritas Netbackup Server 7 installed successfully on Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition. When I installed the Nebackup 7 Client software on another windows server 2008 Enterprise Edition, the installation failed. I tried to uninstall the Symantec Netbackup 7 client from “Program and Features”, the un-installation failed with the error message “This action is only valid for products that is currently installed”

Is anyone has any idea how to remove the Netbackup client manually?

Edit: I know reformatting is an option but there are other running apps that have nbeen configured. As such, reformat is a final resort if all else fails.

If the server is just a Client machine then you can try one more option of uninstalling .
you can run the same Netbackup installation and at that time you will get a option to repair, modify and remove .  You can choose remove option so that it will uninstall Netbackup completely .

Well, there's no option at all for modify/repair/remove. The installer will just simply run and bugged out subsequently.

Anyway, I tried the following:-
1. Install NetBackup Client 6.5.4 on top of the 7 - Installation fail
2. Install another application to help remove the NetBackup 7 from my system - this was successful. At this juncture, the client is completely removed.
3. I tried installing NetBackup 7 client again but same thing happen. So I used the application installed in step (2) to remove the bugged installation from the system.
4. Install NetBackup Client 6.5.4 - Installation successful.
5. Update 6.5.4 Client to 7 - Bugged out again...
Note that everytime the installaer bugged out, I can't uninstall anymore, so I have to removed the bugged installation using the application installed in step (2).
6. Install NetBackup Client 6.5.4 - successful. Since the Master server (7) is able to communicate with the 6.5.4 Client, I am currently using this setup.

I had managed to installed the NetBackup 7 Client before and after some trace back, this is what I recalled:-
- I had previously installed successfully on a Windows Server 2008. This was a standalone system.
- Now I am trying to install to the same server but in a clustered environment i.e. Server A and B.

The question is: Does the clustering of these servers require special steps/procedures for NetBackup 7 Client to be installed? Does the client need to be installed before setting up the clustered environment? If that's the case, would I need two Client residing on each server (or every server in the cluster)?

Can you find the installation log from the failed installation in your %TEMP% folder? This will hopefully give a reason for the failure.
NetBackup client must always be installed on each cluster node locally. You will set up policies to configure local drives for the physical node names and a separate policy for shared data/database using the virtual name.

And this is the final error thrown.

Besides the access is denied, everything else don't make much sense to me. In addition, since I'm running as administrator, I don't understand why would they be access issues.

I think you might have aware of this .

Even though if you login as administrator , you need to right click on the exe and run as administrator in all windows 2008 servers .

Hope this server is not in clustered environment.

Yes, I right-clicked and ran as administrator.

As for your "hope", it's actually in a clustered environment, which is right now I'm suspecting to be the cause of the problem. As such, I've asked in the earlier post if there is a proper procedures to follow for installing NetBackup 7 Client (since 6.5.4 doesn't have any issues) in a node within a clustered environment.

Just to clarify:
NetBackup does NOT have a problem when installing in a cluster.
The client software is installed on each node individually, using the physical node name as client name when installing.

Installation of Client software is covered in Chapter 6 of the NBU for Win Install Guide .

Are you getting the problem on both nodes or just one?
If you have only tried one node thusfar, please try the other node.
It might be a case that NBU 7 creates different registry keys that your user logon does not have access to.
If it fails on both, please log a call with Symantec Support.

I am having the same exact error. I am tyring to install the client on the passive node of an Windows 2008 SP2 Exchange 2007 SP1 Rollup 10 CCR cluster and get the same error in the same place of the install.

Is their a solution to the problem besides reinstalling the system?

Just had the same issue installing on a Windows 2008 64 Bit R2 Enterprise Exchange 2010 CAS and Hub transport server (which is also a Virtual Server).  I know this isn't going to be a Symantec best fix however I looked at the logs and watched where the install was going wrong.  The install (for me at least) seemed to fault when removing the backup files before installing the Live Update modules.  I killed the first msiexec*32 process (even that seems a bit odd as I was installing on a 64 bit system) just under the parent msiexec process as soon as "removing backup files" appeared.  Which then allowed the install to finish.

Now without a bit more research (and a fair bit of mouse click and see what happens) on a non production server I can't really tell you why this worked.  However my server has now begun to back up and seems to be happy.  I will of course re-post if it all ends in tears.

Hopefully that is of some small help  -  AlexT.

Hi,

I had the same issue, I found this article which solved my problem.

Hope this helps.

I'm assuming you have tried Michael NZ's link to article above.

Else, if you can edit registry files

just delete entries with in

HKEY_CURRENT_USERS\Software\Veritas OR Symantec
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Veritas OR Symantec

(assuming you are not running EndPoint in this server else you need to know what you are deleting)

*Be careful when editing your registry! Especially when it's production environment
