Is there anyway to run jobs (backups/restores) silently so they do no appear in the activity monitor?

Just assume we have a reason to do so ;)

By design the activity monitor is designed to show you all jobs.

Go to that operators GUI
Set a filter to remove the jobs you do not want them to see
Unless they are tech savvy - they will never notice that they are being filtered.

This is very effective also for removing daemons that you are not using, so your operators don't page you for dead processes that you are not using.
