Storage Lifecycle Policy

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can offer any advice on a situation we have with a netbackup environment. I know nothing about netbackup but have been chucked into trying to sort this out. So please forgive any daft questions.

The environment consists of 1xMaster, 1xMedia, 1xi500 library and a Puredisk area attached to the media server. Backups (filesystem, RMAN and VM snapshots) backup to disk, then a dedupe job runs to copy them to tape. This is all part of a Storage Lifecycle Policy as shown;

However, when the backups are running (excluding VM's) 90% fail because it tries to select the master server as its destination, when the disk is on the media server. the storage Unit policy looks okay to me and only specifies the media server;

But despite the above more often than not the filesystem backups will try to pick the master server as this line from a job detail shows.

19/11/2012 15:29:33 - granted resource MediaID=@aaaab;DiskVolume=PureDiskVolume;DiskPool=VIACPNB02-MSDP-DP1;Path=PureDiskVolume;StorageServer=viacpnb02;MediaServer=viacpnb01

We also have a similar issue with RMAN backups that seem to choose which ever media server they like despite it being coded into the script.

I do have cases open with Symantec but i wondered if anyone would have some ideas on this as its confusing the heck out of me.

Thanks for any advice/thoughts.

Andy

It does sound like there is something in your config giving the master rights to the msdp but it fails as it does not have the credentials I would double click the storageserver and on its media servers tab add in the master - this will populate the credentials - also make sure the media server itself is in there Save that and then re-open it and remove the master - just to flush all settings Then try the backup again Hope this helps

If you go to the Credentials section - Storage Servers is the Master listed as a valid server for the pure disk storage server? If so .. should it be?

What exactly is your PureDisk? A dedicated Puredisk server or an appliance (N5020)?

What exactly are the failures - please show us that part of the detailed job description

storage server is showing as StorageServer=viacpnb02

could you please post the compleate detail status of the job,and also the disk pool info

Mark,

I checked in the credentials -> storage server section and the only item listed is the media server.

What is the PureDisk? I believe it is disk coming from a Hitatchi Array. As i said in my original post netbackup is totally new to me. All i can tell you is that looking at the low level design for this project the disk was got from an Hitatchi AMS2500 array. So i assume there mus be some sort of 'open disk' product in play here?

The disk pool is approx 7.6Tb in size (Raw) and only 22% full at this time.

In the Credentials --> Storage Servers section, if you select your media server with MSDP configured (VIACPNB02, I assume), is the master server (VIACPNB01, I assume) listed in the "Media Servers" list?  You can also double-click on the storage server, and see if the master server is selected on the "Media Servers" tab.
