Unix client restore via Windows master

ROFPR

Our environment consists of a NBU 7.0 Enterprise master/media server running on Windows 2003. We have some Solaris clients. Poicy is set to standard and directive is ALL_LOCAL_DRIVES.

Let's say the Solaris server's drive dies and is replaced. How should we go about restoring the entire disk? Our sysadmin says the disk must be mounted to another server and do a redirected restore. I don't know much about UNIX and he doesnt know anything about NetBackup so we are not sure who's right. My understanding is that we should be able to install the OS and then restore on top of it. Who is right?

Two ways to recover the system - make it three:

  1. As per the Sysadmin's method.
  2. As per your method - BUT you will have to carefully select data only. You cannot restore the OS over a running OS.
  3. As per method described in Disaster Recovery chapter of Troubleshooting Guide:
    Install minimum OS on client.
Restore OS (and data that resided on the boot disk) to 2nd disk on client.
Change this 2nd disk to make it the boot disk.
