Hi All,
We are planning to upgrade our NBU to 6.5.6 , due to some hardware incompatibility we are unable to upgrade it to 7.5 as majority of our windows client are still in Win 2000 .
Master Server : AIX 5.3 /64 bit Processor and Media server having the same configuration .
Please let me know any precautions to be taken before upgrade also steps to be taken I have downloaded package “NetBackup_6.5_AIX.tar.gz” from File connect which is the base of 6.5
We need to make our Master server to EMM server as in the current configuration Media server is acting as EMM server .

The important thing is to read the release notes and the installation guide
These will tell you what needs attention before you go ahead with the upgrade
Also take note of the later Breaking news to see if there may be any snags
Once you have checked through all of this you should be prepared
The SORT tools is also very useful.

My recommendation is to upgrade the master and media server to 7.1 and the W2000 clients to 6.5.6.
NBU 6.x (meaning 6.0.x and 6.5.x) will run out of support later this year.
You will need the assistance of a Symantec consulting partner to move EMM to the master.

For an upgrade, W2000 will be left as an option. Only in a new installation you won't see W2000 in the list.
Please see NetBackup backward compatibility in NBU 7.1 Release Notes http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC3643.

Hi Mark,
As per your suggestion we can take the backup of windows 2000 clients into NBU 7.1

For 7.1 upgrade documentation, start with the 7.x Upgrade Portal. Look for 7.1 headings.

Just a quick note this 2012 October NBU 6.x Will not be supported at least you get an extended support that I dont know for how long it will last.

As a vote of confidence, we upgraded our master and media servers to 7.1.0.2 and we still have W2K clients running 6.0.mp4 and the backups are working just fine.
