WIN32 87: Unknown error when backing up clustered W2008 servers

Hi,

My environment consists of only Windows 2008 SP2 64-bit servers and clients  (not R2 version)

I am using NetBackup 7.0.1

The problem is confined to backing up clustered servers only (Exchange and MS SQL servers)

I get partially successful backups with the files below failing to backup.  Shadow Copy Components back up OK.  The backup of C:\ takes a very long time (5 hours!) yet the Shadow Copy Components and other drives are fast and backup normally.

On the surface, it appears to be a permissions problem.  The NetBackup client service is using a NetBackup service account (full domain admin rights and in the local admins group on the clients).  I get “Access denied” message in Windows when I navigate to one of the failed folders e.g.  C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\AppData\Local\Application Data

If I change the NetBackup Client Service to run as the local account I get the same problem.

The really strange thing is, if I exclude C:\Documents and Settings I still get the same warnings. Documents and Settings has been replaced in Windows 2008 by C:\Users but there is a “junction point” for it.  I tried excluding C:\Users as well but that didn’t help.

Odd this as this is down as a know issue:

But you say you have excluded it.

So maybe it is this - where the exclude list is ignored (although it does say it does not apply to clusters? Maybe log a call.)

I guess the first one will actually apply as it is on a local drive

This one does say the following:

(ET2146659) C: drive backups are extremely slow for Windows 2008 Cluster Server
 when VSS is enabled

So maybe it is this one after all - who knows!

I changed my backup policy to only backup C:\Dell and created an exclude for a sub-folder. I ran the backup and the exclude was ignored. I will install the fix referred to in TECH144077. I now have a dilemma, which version of the fix to install. The document says: eebinstaller.2206134.1.x86.exe Windows x86 Installation eebinstaller.2206134.1.AMD64.exe Windows x64 Installation I have 64-bit bit on Intel CPU. Which of the above do I install?

For any 64 bit ones use the AMD one - it is just the Symantec naming convention.

Yes, that fix worked! By installing the hotfix and excluding C:\Documents and Settings the backup has finished successfully in just under 6 minutes as opposed to 5 hours!
