The restore is failing with the Error "the restore failed to recover the requested files(5)".

I have tried restoring it to the original\different location to the same filer as well as to another filer which is getting backed up on the same master backup server.

Here is why it is failing:

24/11/2014 13:43:21.991 [Debug] NB 51216 ndmpagent 134 PID:6036 TID:1304 File ID:134 [No context] 1 [CtnLogMsgCB] NDMP_LOG_NORMAL 0 RESTORE: /vol/v_fs0035/q_fs0035/DEPT/Methode/Speciale Processen/Lassen/Restore/LMB_Final.xlsm/: Path could not be created.

This is not a NetBackup issue.

Where are you trying to restore to?

restoring image bbtflrbru01_1415997946

...  removing rename file F:\Veritas\NetBackup\.rename.1320 on client bbtsrvbgs01

Seems you are trying to restore NDMP backup to a Windows client?

This is not possible.

NDMP backup can only be restored to another filer of the same manufacturer.
So, NetApp can only be restored to same or another NetApp, EMC to same or another EMC filer, etc.

PS:
NBU 6.x ran out of support more than 2 years ago,
You really need to upgrade...

Hello Marianne,

I'm trying to restore the NDMP backups to the filer. I can confirm this as when selecting the source and destination, I'm selecting the filer in both drops downs and the type as NDMP.

I have checked the previous failed restore jobs as well and can see the above line which you have mentioned with different •rename file.

The F drive is where the Netbackup application Installed on. I'm unable to upgrade the NBU application as the Master Backup Server is having Win 2000 and I have informed the management regarding the EOS and the issues we might face if we are to run into problems.

Please let me know if you require any logs from my side.

Thanks

Check the restore target path if it has sufficient space, or if the write permission is allowed.

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH147133

This technote explains by enabling ndmpagent logs, you can tell what could be the cause.

Please enable logs to troubleshoot:

On master: create bprd folder under netbackup\logs and restart NBU Request Service.

On media server: bpbrm and bptm folders.

After next attempt, please copy logs to .txt files (e.g. bprd.txt) and upload as File attachment.

Hello Watsons,

Yes I did check Technote earlier and have verified with the Netapp Administrator, who confirmed that we do have enough space available to restore and that we do have read\write permissions to the destination volume where I'm trying to restore the file.

Hello Marianne,

I have enabled the logs as suggested by you and restarted the NBU Request Service and refired the restore job which failed again with the same error. The backup server is acting as both Master and Media server.

Please find the logs attached.

Thanks

No ndmpagent log and it is needed:

24/11/2014 11:25:34 - Error ndmpagent(pid=5968) NDMP restore failed from path /vol/v_fs0035/q_fs0035

vxlogcfg -a -p 51216 -o 134 -s DebugLevel=5

Then reproduce the issue and post up the ndmpagent log (after you run: vxlogview -i 134 -d all -t 00:30:00 > ndmpagent_log.txt)  along with the Detailed Status output once again.

If your backup failed longer than 30 minutes ago, extend the time with the vxlogview command.

Once finished reduce logging level:

vxlogcfg -a -p 51216 -o 134 -s DebugLevel=1

Hello Revaroo,

As requested, please find the ndmp agent log attached after following the steps you've suggested.

Thanks

revaroo is right. We need ndmpagent log.

I had a look at the logs.

The only error is returned by ndmpagent in bptm log:

11:25:34.962 [6060.6356] <16> read_data: ndmpagent reports failure - this path

Nothing else - no indication of what the issue is with 'this path'....

HI Revaroo,

Thanks for pointing out the exact issue.

After some digging, I was able to find out the below information.

This is not a NetBackup issue as Revaroo pointed out

Please refer the below document link.
http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/netbackup-ndmp-restore-failure-error-2850

The interesting thing is that in place of the file (which is supposed to be created) the empty folder is created (with the name of the file)

If I remember correctly, this was an issue present in ONTAP 7.3.7, which was resolved in 7.3.7P1 as suggested in the online forums.

Thanks
