Can somebody confirm if the first-year cost is a one-off cost or is it necesssary to renew if you don't need th eon-going support/maintenance.
This is a confusion which seems to creep into many softeware products these days.

Life's too short to start chasing the Symantec Licencing Department when I am only 'considering' the use of the product.
It's surposing that nobody seems to know this fundamental informaiton.
Symantec 'help', of course, refers you to the community and so it goes round in circles.

Yes, the support contract is for whatever year(s) you purchase. The standard is (I believe) 1 year. After that, you will continue to get updates through LiveUpdate, assistance to these forums. But you will need to renew if you want direct access to tech support.

That seems very clear.
I would have thought that the need for technical support would decline after the first few weeks of using the product so no real need to pay for it perpetually..
