Hi,
I have recently done a clean install of BE 2010. It's a 64 bit installation that I am running under the trial license. All updates have been installed.
After installing a remote agent, I have attempted to create a backup job, but, I am unable to browse the network to select a server to backup. If I use the wizard I'm informed that no remote agents are on the network!
When creating a manual backup job, if i select 'Manage User-Defined Selections' the program crashes out!
If I return to the install remote agents wizard, I am informed that one server has an agent and is fully up to date!! I can also see the network to install agents with no problem!
Anyone got any ideas on how to get BE to be able to see the network to create a backuop job?
I've attached a screen dump of the error when it crashes.
Thanks
Nigel

Here is the article that talks about it
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH69999
As per the error message it seems to be .net. Please try as per the TN above and if that doesn't resolve then try below steps:
1> repair install BE from add remove program or cd setup and see if it resolves otherwise go to step2
2> uninstall all the .net framework and reboot the server.(make sure no other application is dependent on the .net framework)
3> install the .net framework 3.5 and reboot the server again.
4> you should be able to launch BE now.

Hi,
1 Which a/c you are using to browse network resources does it have domain admin & administrators right with for win2008 it should have log on as batch job permission assigned to it
2 Also from win2008 explorer are you able to browse network computer does it work from there
3 Also if you got favourite resources in selection it will show list of remote computer with remote agent install does that work
12-06-2010 02:37 AM
Hi Sammy_perfect,
1, account has full admin/backup/exchange and log on as a batch job.
2, yes, can browse the network.
3, I have installed one remote agent and added it as a favorite, I have run a job on this resource. But I am now unable to select anything or go to the favorite resources! I attach a screen dump of the last point I can get to before it crashes out.
Thanks

Hi Nigel,
Thanks for your response & the scrennshot you have posted in that nothing is visible in the selection so I would like to ask if you are able to see local resources on backup server or they are also not visible
Also when remote agent is crashing it is crashing on backup server or that remote server.
If it crashing on backup server could you please go to services -backupexec remote agent- stop the service --in start type enter -debug & start service & then try it once again
Also possible try with different account & see if that helps
Thank You

Use the default domain admin account "administrator" as the backup exec service account.

Hi Sammy_perfect
No, nothing is visable, I can't see the local resources either.
Is the remote agent crashing? All I know is that I can't 'see' anything when I attempt to create a backup job. I can still browse the network to install agents though!
I have changed the account used for the remote agent from local admin to domain admin account, no difference.
Thanks

Hi Nigel,
Remote agent on all the computer including backup server should always be using local system account to run
What I suggested you to do is try using different account & see if that helps
If still not then please follow the link & post the logs (Note : in sgmon donot select all of the check boxes only select one for remote agent, job engine & check capture to file)
Once the remote agent crashes you can stop the debugging & then post the log via uploading it

Thank You

Hi sammy,
Ran sgmon, then changed the remote agent logons back to local admin, ran it again. No difference in anything. None of the services appear to crash. The interface crashes out, and I have to restart form the shorcut, but I have noticed that BkupExec.exe is still running in task manager (after crashing the interface a few times I realised I had three/four instances still 'running').
Logfile below:
One thing, when I did a repair from the installation disc, I was able to browse the network to create backup jobs. The server has not been re-booted since, no changes made, the program just appears to loose this ability, but only for creating a new job. Installation of agents by browsing the network is not affected!

Hi ,
Log seems to be incomplete could you upload the whole sgmon.log in c-programfiles-symantec-backupexec-log directory
Thank You

We have the same problem with a Windows Server 2008 R2 SBE 2010 64-bit connecting, browsing, and selecting contents of a Windows Server 2008 R2 with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP1 installed. Essentially, when trying to make the selections on the server by expanding the server in a new backup job, for example, the entire app hangs or freezes. What we have found is that on the remote server, port 10000 is being used by another application. If we stop the service that uses that port, restart the Backup Exec agent on the remote server, and retry making the backup selections on the SBE server, it works.
Run the following:
netstat -ab
You should be able to determine which conflicting service listens on the same port and hopefully you will be able to change it to something else, so that services no longer conflict. Once you identify and change one of the ports, restart the conflicting service as well as the remote agent service on the server in question. You should then be able to make your backup selections on the suspect server.

Hi Nigel,
Is DNS working correctly from your media server? I normally get around any potential DNS issues by using a custom list containing the IP addresses of the servers with RAWS installed.
Try this and see if it works.
Thanks!

Hi all,
Sammy - That is the full log. From when I started sgmon to when I closed it.
Cecil - Thanks, but I don't even get that far. I'm unable to browse anything when creating a job, not even the local server shows up. Browsing works for all other parts of the program.,
CraigV - Yes DNS is working correctly. Think you mean 'manage user-defined selections' from within the 'new backup job' link, that just crashes he interface!
12-08-2010 05:09 AM
Yep, 'Manage User-defined selections' is it...keep on forgetting it =)
Have you run LiveUpdate on your media server as a matter of interest?
12-08-2010 06:07 AM
Yes, am up todate with all updates, really strange thing is, this is happening on two servers that that I have 2010 R2 on.
Why do I appear to be only one that has this problem!! And why on two different installations. Am I jinxed!
12-08-2010 06:18 AM
Nigel: Not a firewall/AV playing up on that server possibly?
12-08-2010 07:42 AM
Firewall not switched on.
A/V temporarily switched off - no change!
12-08-2010 08:11 AM
Hi,
Problem seems to be your OS, I think computer browser service is getting stop. Better to update the OS patches and give the login credentilas once again to all the Backup Exec Services which are running under Domain User ID.
Regards!
