We have installed the trial version of backup exec 2010 as a stand alone on a new server with our old 8 slot tape carousel drive from HP. The software is not working correctly (very slow tape backup and does not span multiple tapes) and since we are trying the software there is no support for it. Does anybody have an idea why the backup is so slow (less then 120 mb a minute) and why it does not span multiple tapes? We would like to make sure it works before buying.
Thanks,

What is the tape drive model?

How do you mean, does not span multiple tapes ?
Are the tapes overwiteable ?
Backup Exec can only append the first tape in the job, if the tape is full, it needs an overwritable or empty tape to continue.

We have 5 tapes in the carousal, two tapes are full and three are empty. We have about 1 TB to backup and what is currently happening is it fills up one tape and then stops. We need it to continue to keep backing up on the next tapes till the 1 TB is backed up.
I will have to check on the append vs. overwrite on these tapes.

do you have a ny partitions defined in your loader?
As for slow backups
is this recent, or have they always been slow
local or remote backups
are there lots of soft errors on the tapes?

If you have an alert asking you to import an overwriteable tape, it means that your other tapes are write-protected and you would need to adjust your OPP.
There are many factors that can slow down a backup and using another backup software will not necessarily speed things up. You should expand each joblog and check the timing of each backup and verify steps. This will tell you which is slowing things down.

Did you check the alerts tab if there is an active alert ?
What happens to the job when it needs to pick the second tape, does it fail, or does it say something else ?
