Hello guys,

As i was installing bare metal restore on Master server, i have faced folowing error

Starting the NetBackup Bare Metal Restore daemon.

The NetBackup Bare Metal Restore daemon (bmrd) was not started.
To use NetBackup Bare Metal Restore, you will have to start bmrd
using the following command:

/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/rc.bmrd start

[Info] V-127-41 Setting up BMR Database ...
/mycdrom/vADD/NBBMR/catalog/anb/bmr.inst[547]: 651324 Memory fault
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bmrsetupmaster failed.
The log file in /usr/openv/netbackup/logs/nbdb may contain more information.
Please restart the installation after the problem has been resolved.

My netbackup version is 6.5.6, OS is AIX.

Your prompt response is required.

NBU 6.5 ran out of Support on 3 October 2012.

You REALLY need to upgrade without delay!

All I can suggest at this point in time is that you carefully go through the BMR Admin Guide - if memory serves me right, you need to run a command to firstly setup the master server as BMR master (something like bmrsetupmaster).

Also ensure that BMR patch level matches the NBU patch level on the master.

The only other thing I can think of, also from the manual detailing the steps you followed, is this:

Note: The BMR master server product releases a patch whenever the NetBackup server releases a patch. If you install BMR for the first time on a NetBackup server that has already been patched, the BMR daemon does not start. Instead, install the matching BMR patch first, then start the BMR daemon.

It's not something I've ever been involved with, so wouldn't even know if the subsequent errors you are seeing could be classed as 'normal', but if your master is running 6.5.6 and you're installing 6.5GA BMR for the first time then maybe you just need to 'ignore' the errors & try installing the 6.5.6 patch for BMR before you can proceed further?

Just an idea (which looking back, unsurprisingly, Marianne has already suggested!)

Verify the AIX OS is compatible with NBU 6.5

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH70729

Check the kernel have the following tuning applied.

Netbackup 6.5 is out of support, please consider a upgrade. Basically you are all alone running a unsupported version of Netbackup - just word of warning.

Thanx Nicolai for your response.

Aix is obviously supported as i have been runnin my master server on it, and i have applied 2nd tuning parameter as instructed by the document but still i'm getting the same error.

Yeah sure, we are considering an upgrade in near future.

Waiting for your kind response

Thanx Marianne for your response,

i have already informed my higher management about end of support of current NBU version.

Yes i am following this guide and there is no such step where one has to run this command. It just says insert the CD, select Netbackup ad-on and from there select NBBMR, that's it.

waiting for your kind response.

You need to install 6.5.6 BMR patch.
BMR patch level must match NBU version (see my post above).

If bpmrd still does not start after patch installation, try bmrsetupmaster.
/usr/openv/netbackup/bin/bmrsetupmaster
