Not only this TAPE1 , all tapes under this MediaServer1 are having same problem as follow. But other tapes under different media servers are running normal .

They are running on Netbackup 3.4 server and media tapes are just replaced on line ( w/o shutting down the tape library ). The TAPE1 from the media server 1 is mounting forever and never get mounted and written. Is it due to media tape problem or netbackup 3.4 problem? Kindly advise since I am having this problem for long time.

did you try to robtest as Judy had mentioned earlier...

/usr/openv/netbackup/volmgr/robtest  and then follow instructions.

try moving a tape to tape drive.

once mounted,  you can

mt -f <device path> status

and try to unload and move the tape back to orignal slot.

It sounds like you might not have the tape drives configured correctly.

Example 2 drives

on server you have rmt0 and rmt1

you configer drives in netbackup
robot drive 1 is rmt1 and robot drive 2 is rmt0

so robot mounts tape in robot drive 1, so media server is looking for a tape to show up in rmt1....

but....

robot drive 1 is NOT REALLY rmt1 it really is rmt0....
so the media server NEVER sees the tape mount in rmt1.

Try to conpare the serial numbers of the drives in your media server, to the drive locations in the library and make sure they match.

In my example robot drive 1 should be rmt0 and robot drive 2 should be rmt1.

I don't have to know how to spell....I work on Unix.

(is there a sale on this issue, I think this is the third one I have read today that seems to be the same problem)

May I know where do I check ?
According to the master server, device management ,
I have 4 drives .

Drive  0  hcart   1    LTODrv1   /dev/rmt/0cbn
Drive  1  hcart   2    LTODrv2   /dev/rmt/1cbn
Drive  2  hcart   3    LTODrv3   /dev/rmt/2cbn
Drive  3  hcart   4    LTODrv4   /dev/rmt/3cbn

According to your message
"Try to conpare the serial numbers of the drives in your media server, to the drive locations in the library and make sure they match"

May I know where should I go see the serial numbers in my media server ? I mean any path / location ?

I know how to do it on AIX using diag but not a clue on solrias.

but you can test.

use robtest and move a tape to robot drive 1.

look to see what you have that drive setup as for rmt

now on your server do a tar to that rmt.
if it works then your robot driver number and your rmt match

if not the try a tar to another rmt until you find the rmt that sees the tape in the drive.

i have not worked on 3.4 but i think /usr/openv/volmgr/bin/scan command should give you the serial number and passthru name.

also try for tpautoconf -report_disc to check if there are any discrepencies.

tpautoconfig -t will give you serial #

and make sure your drive types and media is same density.
