Move existing 5.x media server to New 6.0 Master

Need help:

i need to move an existing media server (win2k, NB5mp4) from one master (also win2k, nb5mp4) to a new 6.0 master. The media server only backs itself up and some network locations but i do need to move its images and media history as well. would it be as simple as changing the master server name in the first line of the Server list and then moving the catalog directory to the new master? i get tripped up here thinking about what to do with the volume manager database.

any help/ideas on doing this move would be much appreciated.

thanks

upgrading to 6.0
http://forums.symantec.com/discussions/thread.jspa?threadID=68537&tstart=0
run NCVU utility before upgrade
run a catalog consistency check (bpdbm ?consistency)
is your catalog data in binary or ACSII? It is
highly suggested to convert any NetBackup ACSII catalog
information to binary mode using the cat_convert utility
install pbx
upgrade to latest version of 5.1 (and stay there :)
nbpushdata command after installing 6 and latest mp.

would really like to avoide downgrading
before upgrading once again described in

Thanks Dennis for your reply but i'm building a brand new master with 6.0 mp4 and i'll be moving this media server from an already existing environment to this one.

Hi XX
You need to add the SERVER entry in the media server and the SERVER entry in the master server and import the tapes for the backups involved in for that particular media server or else tar the folder under the image folder on the old master and the cp it to the new master and untar it for the images to take effect.

ciao

Ankur, thanks for your help. i guess the volumes won't be too much of an issue because the library that the media server is attached to will be moved over as well. Can i move 5.x catalog image files to 6.0? i'll have to try it and find out.

thanks again

Hi XX,

You need to execute the steps stated in the following document for your current NB5 backup domain:
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/230047.htm
How to correctly decommission a NetBackup Media Server and remove it from the NetBackup environment

If the steps are not done, there'll be problem when executing bpmedialist, etc after the media server is removed from the domain and the problemn could be sticky to resolve.

Thanks Chia, but i need to move the media server and its images to a different environment. i have decomissioned a media server before and a part of the procedure is to assign its images to another media server within the same environment and then adding the "force media restore" entry in the vm.conf. i don't see how i can do this if i'm moving the tapes, drives, library and images to the new environment. thanks for your help.
