NetBackup 7 - Recovering old tapes (Import failed, the image was not created with TIR information)

Kwinter

I have two tapes which I performmed a 'phase 1' and found that the backup for this client was on.

Tape:  NPK733      Server1   shows  the following info

   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Found existing image information for client Server1, done on 01/09/2010  05:13:45

Recreating copy 1, fragment 1 information for image

   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tape: NPK752      Server1   shows the following info

   -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Found existing image information for client Server1, done on 01/09/2010  05:13:45

Recreating copy 1, fragment 2 information for image

Found existing image information for client Server1, done on 01/09/2010  05:13:45

Recreating copy 1, fragment 3 information for image

       (continues to)

Found existing image information for client Server1, done on 01/09/2010  05:13:45

Recreating copy 1, fragment 7 information for image

  -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I try the 'Phase 2' for the Tape # NPS733

  Importing policy ... (Server1_1263032025), media id NPS733, created on 01/09/2010  05:13:45

Importing by reading INDEX filre information only.

Importing of policy ... (Server1_1263032025), failed, the image was not created with TIR information.

Status = no images were successfully processed.

Not sure what I can do to recover this Server's backup?

Thank you for any ideas?

Do you definately have all of the tapes involved for this import?

It has read the backup header which indicates it is a TIR backup but has not yet found the TIR fragment on the tapes.

Either something went wrong when it was duplicated or there is another tape out there with the rest of the information on.

If you do have everything you could see if this very old tech note helps you:

Thanks Mark_Solution,

I have a list of 12 year-end backup tapes; I will check all of their Phase 1 logs to make sure the TIR fragment is on one of them.

I didn't know about this, I was looking for fragments 1,2,3,...

Thanks again, I will update you.

I did find that this backup only had the two tapes and the backup was missing the TIR (True Image Recovery).

What I had to do was:

1)  Run:  Phase 1

2)  From the Master NB Server, find the client's image header file located in (had to look in a few subdirectories which had the c-time for directory name):

     C:\Program Files\Veritas\NetBackup\db\images\server1\1263000000

     Edit the header file:  00t_File_Backups_Server1_Full_1263032025_FULL

     ------------------------- and change the "TIR_INFO" parameter from a value of "1" to "0" ---------

------------------------- see below, I already made the change indicating to NB that there isn't any TIR for this backup

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then I ran the Phase 2 and it worked.

Thank you eveyone!
