Tape drive zoning in VMWARE

3 x Exchange 2010 MBX server in ESX VMWARE

2 x 2 autoloader tape drive connected to Master server

ESX VMWARE, Master server and tape library are connected to same SAN switch

Need to implement SAN media server

Is it possible to zone tape drives to virtual machine (Exchange servers) ????

Any barriers in above config...

Tape storage is not supported in a virtual environment - only disk.

You can take VM backup through SAN by using vStorage API of vmware but that will provide file level or full vm restore. Database backups and restores can only be agent based and only supported through LAN.

Is it possible to zone tape drives to virtual machine (Exchange servers) ????

=> A week ago or so somebody asked that in house. In theory this could work, however we do not support it and no plans exist for the future to make this work.
