Unable to configure NB6.5.4 with vSphere 4.0.u2

Hi to all of You!
After spending a lot of time trying to install and configure NB6.5.4 with vSphere 4.0u1 and now u2 (as VCB), I think taht's the time to ask You for help.

What is all about?

4 VMWare ESX 4.0.u2 hosts with SAN storage
1 VMWare vCenter Server (Windows 2003 R2 Standard SP2 32bit as ESX's VM)
1 VCB-PROXY server === NB 6.5.4 Media Server + NB 6.5.4 Client [as recommended by Symantec/Veritas] (Windows 2003 Enterprise SP2 32bit physical server)
1 NB 6.5.4 Master Server (Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise SP2 32bit as ESX's VM)
Additional information about configuration:
SAN visiblity: 4 ESX Servrs and Media Server
Master Server -> VIrtual Machine proxy -> points to VMware vCenter Server

From the beginning:
Dosc say that I need to:
1 - install NB Master server - DONE.
2 - install Media Server on machine where VCB Framework is installed - DONE.
3 - install NB Client on the same machine as Media Server =====> impossible to do - Client cannot be installed on top of Media Server
So I uninstalled Media Server, Installed Client and installed Media Server Again => it worked well.

I started to confIgure anything as it stayed in 293350 and 289771.
When I was trying to access VMs from GUI (after increasing discovery timeout to 500s), I got message "Failed to get VM ... info". When I was doing it by cmdline commands on Media Server, it got about 1 minute to get whole VM inventory from vCenter Server.
So I thought "It's only Windows, let's restart it". So I did it with VCB-Proxy/Media Server. After reboot Client disapeared. Im'n not able even to reinstall it from Control Panel - Windows says that this operation is permitted (or so) only for installed programs (of course NB Client appears in Windows inventory).

What could go wrong?
Regards in advance,
Y.

Hi,

You just need to install either media server or client software on the VCB proxy server to which the datastore LUNs are presented.

However configuring VCB proxy as media server is recomended for better backup performce as it is going to be a LAN free backup.

VCB Configuration

Click Host Properties > Master Server > double click NetBackup master
server > Virtual Machine Proxy Servers.
 Click Add.
In the New Server dialog box, enter the name of the VMware backup proxy
server, and click Add.
When you are finished adding proxies, click Close.
 Click Apply and then OK.

Add Credentials for the ESX/Virtual Center under Netbackup Admin Console->  Credentials-> Virtual Machine Servers

Finally create a Flashbackup- Windows policy, and Select a policy storage unit or storage unit group.

Select Perform snapshot backups.
The FlashBackup-Windows policy type automatically selects Perform
snapshot backups.

Select Perform off-host backup and Use virtual machine proxy.

In the Virtual Machine Proxy Server field (Off-host backup machine on
Windows): select the name of the VMware backup proxy server from the
pull-down list.

Click Snapshot Options.

Specify these values for the VMware snapshot method:
Snapshot mount point
When the VMware backup proxy server creates a snapshot of the virtual
machine, it mounts the snapshot on this directory on the proxy server. An
example mount point is:
G:\mnt

Virtual Machine Backup parameter
0-File: For backup of either of the following:

Windows: Individual folders and files, individual drives, or all local
drives, with the MS-Windows-NT policy type.

Individual drives or all local drives, with the FlashBackup-Windows
policy type.

Note: The 0-File option cannot back up Windows system files or VMware
system files

1-FullVM: Included in a NetBackup 6.5.0.x patch: For backup of the entire
virtual machine. This option works with the FlashBackup-Windows policy
type only. Individual files cannot be restored from this backup.
2-Mapped FullVM: Included in a NetBackup 6.5.0.x patch: For backup of the
entire virtual machine. This option works with the FlashBackup-Windows
policy type only. Two kinds of restore are possible: restore of the entire
virtual machine or of individual folders and files.
For a tabular presentation of these parameters and the type of backup and
restore they enable

To save these settings, click Apply.

On the Clients tab, click New to specify virtual machines to back up.
NetBackup searches for virtual machines on the SAN and displays them in
the following dialog box.

Click the checkbox next to each virtual machine you want to back up.
Click OK.
