When does the media move from Scratch Pool

mpmp
Not applicable

Hi,

I'm using netbackup 7.5 on Solaris and noticed, that the media still remains in the Scratch Pool after used by a policy and only moves to the assigned volume pool later. When and how does this happen?

By the time you see the media id in 'Requesting Resource' in Activity Monitor. You will also be able to trace media assignment in nbrb log on the master server and bptm log on the media server. Do not rely on what you see in the Media GUI as it does not refresh automatically.

When a policy runs, if the volume pool associated to that policy has no tapes it will move a tape from Scratch to that Pool for use.

Only when all of the images on that tape will the tape return to it's previous pool, so Scratch.

If you are seeing the Tape still in the Scratch Pool when a backup is writing to it, I would suggest you to log out of the console and log back in as it's not refreshing correctly, or use vmquery command from the command line (or available_media).

If the tape has not moved to the Volume Pool specificed in the policy then the job would fail with a status 96 - unable to allocate new media for backup, storage unit has none available
