Upgrade RHEL 4.6 to RHEL 4.8 for VCS 4.1

I have installed Symantec Storage Foundation v.4.0 for Linux, Veritas Cluster Servises 4.1 with oracle agents on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 update 6.

Can I upgrade the operating system to RHEL 4 update 8, without any problems? Where can I find a document that describes OS support RHEL 4 update 8?

Hello,

As per SF 4.1-MP4 (the last MP released), supported RHEL was till update 5

Operating System     Architecture      Kernel

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 4 x86 (32-bit)

2.6.9-42EL 2.6.9-42ELsmp 2.6.9-42ELhugemem x86_64 (Intel Xeon, AMD Opteron)

2.6.9-42EL 2.6.9-42ELsmp 2.6.9-42ELlargesmpIA64 (Intel)

2.6.9-42EL 2.6.9-42ELlargesmp

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 5 x86 (32-bit)

2.6.9-48EL 2.6.9-48ELsmp 2.6.9-48ELhugemem x86_64 (Intel Xeon, AMD Opteron)
2.6.9-48EL 2.6.9-48ELsmp 2.6.9-48ELlargesmp IA64 (Intel)
2.6.9-48EL 2.6.9-48ELlargesmp

So it doesn't talks about anything above supported,  as you said it may work but it is not mentioned in supported notes...

However if you see release notes for 5.x , for e.g 5.0-MP3, it clearly says:

■ Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 (RHEL 4) with Update 3 (2.6.9-34 kernel) or later
on AMD Opteron or Intel Xeon EM64T (x86_64).

Hello,

very first thing, it is not recommended to use mix versions of SF/VCS as you are using SF (I believe VxVM 4.0) & VCS @ 4.1

secondly SF 4.0 is End of Life long ago, infact SF 4.1 is also End of Life now.

Thirdly, if you are looking whether OS will support RHEL update 8, best place is to look at RedHat knowledgebase..... http://kbase.redhat.com

& if you are looking for information if Veritas 4.0 will support RHEL update 8, well I am afraid, as 4.0 is End of Life, the documents for 4.0 are also archived .. so not sure what kernel versions are supported on that...

I found this article for RHEL 4 U8, probably will answer your query..

http://docs.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/4/html/Release_Notes/U8/Release_Notes/index.html

Following link will give you all the docs you need for RHEL 4 including all install guides

I'm not sure of the versions SF, perhaps SF and VCS versions the same.  I'm looking for information if VERITAS Storage Foundation 4.1 MP4 (or MP1 - MP4) will support RHEL update 8? I know that the kernel 2.6.9-89 uses with SF MP4, but I do not know how to prove it.

SF operational requirements only for the kernel version or the packages version too?

I have seen many customers using RHEL4 Update 8 with SFHA 4.1MP4 without complications.

Any mismatch of SF (VM / VXFS) and VCS is not recommended, like Gaurav indicated.

Find what is installed on the system with:

rpm -aq |grep VRTS
