Weird annoymous emails appear in IMAP Thunderbird client

Hi Everyone,
In our environment we're using Exchange 2007 SP1 & Enterprise Vault SP3
A bulk of our users are using Mozilla Thunderbird 2.x & 3.x as the default mail client,
I received EV message with no sender or subject in Thunderbird. There's an attachment called EnterpriseVaultSettings.txt
I tried running a message tracking query on Exchange, but I'm not able to find any log entries referring to this email. However after a few hours, the message is removed from the user's mailbox.
Has anyone experienced this? or has a idea what is happening in the background?

This is the message source:

Hi ya,
This is the hidden message that EV places in the mailbox and holds the various policy settings.  I know this has shown in the past for some older Entourage clients but unfortunately I do not know how to hide them from your users in Thunderbird.

Regards,
Tony

edit- Also, as verification, notice the time is around 12:00.  Most likely your task is set to synch at noon and midnight.  :)

Hi Tony,
Thanks for your reply. So If this a hidden message, why does it linger around for so long? and Would there be a problem if the user deletes this message?

Regards,

Hello -S,

the hidden message basically indicates if the mailbox is enabled for archiving, with what settings.
It should be ' hidden' , and not deleted.
EV uses this message to determine if the mbx needs to be archived, how etc.

It will remain in the mailbox as long as the mailbox is enabled for archiving.

I'm not sure thunderbird is a supported mailclient.. check the compatibility guide on this.

You want to educate your users to just ignore it.  Honestly, I am not sure why it shows and then just disappears, just a quirky thing with IMAP I suppose.

@GertjanA - Thunderbird is not a supported client :\
@TonySterling - Does Symantec intend to support IMAP or other Non MS products (eg. Firefox) on their EV roadmap?

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Sounds like We'll have to bear with it.

One last question, We're planning to move to Exchange 2010 soon, Will EV 8.x support this? Any improvements? known issues?

regards,
-S

Hi GertjanA,

Thank Q for the info. I'll keep my ears to the ground.
Any idea of what we can anticipate with this new version? eg. Firefox Support?
Since Exchange 2010 will suport Firefox, I wonder if EV will follow suite.

Cheers,
-S
